Social media and Technology

Today, many people use social media and technology for positive things and some for negatives. Technology is being used all over the world for many reasons and everyone is using it from toddlers to elderly people. Some good had been used lately.

An example of how social media has been used for good, in the end, is when a tragic event happened on October 25, 2012. A young girl named Felicia Garcia committed suicide because of bullying. She did not come from the best home. Both of her parents died when she was very young and she was a foster child. It was said that football players taunted her online because of her many piercings and because she was a foster child. One day, as she was walking from school with a friend, she waited for a train to come and as it approached she threw herself in front of it. Her friend Briana Torres tried to stop her but she snatched away from her and she was reported dead that afternoon. Many friends and family created an anti cyber-bullying Facebook page to stop further suicides because of bullying.

Athletes even get caught up in the social media and sometimes it costs them their jobs. On July 25, 2012 it was reported that a Greek athlete was expelled after she posted a racist comment on twitter. She apparently tweeted a "joke" about African immigrants. There was a very heated debate on whether it is fair for her to be kicked off of the team and I guess the voted that she be kicked off.

Celebrities use social media to further their careers. Many people such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga post many pictures and statuses and they have millions of followers on Twitter and on Facebook. They use the social media and technology to wish people well and send out their prayers. Recent posts were made for those who were affected by the storm Sandy.

  1. I do agree but have you ever considered some of the pictures and statuses posted by celebrities are a little too much? especially when its not their actual twitter or facebook account?
